Pen15 is a comedic TV series on Hulu that captures the awkwardness of being a middle schooler in the year 2000, down to every embarrassing, cringe-worthy detail. It features the characters of Maya and Anna, two best friends who are played by 30-something year old women despite their characters’ middle school age. In this title sequence, two contrasting handwritten type styles reflect Maya and Anna, as if they were passing notes back to each other in class. We wanted to encompass nostalgic 90s and early 2000s middle school ephemera throughout the animation. The integration of stop-motion-like movements and handwritten details enhance the feelings of imperfection that come with the pre-teen experience.
